The coin’s reverse design portrays a voyageur and an aboriginalpaddling a birch-bark canoe. The faint lines in the backgroundrepresent the Northern Lights. The voyageur design was sculpted byEmanuel Hahn and used on the dollar until 1986. It was then replacedwith the 1987 Canadian 1 dollar coin (Loonie). 1967 marked the end ofthe silver dollar as a business strike, or a coin issued forcirculation. After 1967, the dollar coin was made of nickel, exceptfor non-circulating commemorative issues for the collector market, which continue to contain silver. The minimum value of a pre-1967 circulating silver dollar is $13.15,due to the value of the metal that composes it.
